The Calangute Beach is one of the most popular beaches in North Goa.Once known as the Kolongutt Beach, the Calangute Beach owes its current name to the Portuguese sailors who renamed the place years ago. According to legends, the reason why the beach was named Calangute was because the term ‘Cal’ refers to Goddess Kali, who was revered and worshipped by the local population of fishermen in the area. Another possible origin of the name could be the words 'Konvallo-Ghott' (pit of the coconut tree), and this is mainly because the village is surrounded by coconut trees.
