OVERVIEW

An important Hindu temple situated in the city of Amritsar, Durgiana Temple is devoted to Goddess Durga. It is also known as the Lakshmi Narayan Temple and was built during the 16th century. Similar to the Sarovar in Golden Temple, there is also a water tank or lake surrounding the main temple construction. Durgiana temple history dates back to the year 1921 when its construction was initiated by Guru Harsai Mal Kapoor. This newly built temple derived inspiration from the mesmerizing architectural style of the famous Sikh shrine, the Golden Temple. Just like the Golden Temple, Durgiana Temple is built in the middle of a lake. A bridge, similar to that of Golden Temple, is built across the lake, which provides access to the main temple area. The the structure of the dome, and the canopies also resembles that of the Golden Temple. After the construction of the temple was completed, Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya inaugurated the auspicious temple by himself. Major Hindu festivals like Dussehra, Janmashtami, Rama Navami, Diwali, and more are celebrated with huge pomp and show at the Durgiana Temple Amritsar. The beauty of the temple is adorned with dazzling lights, and alluring decors during these festivals, and a large number of people visit the temple to offer prayers to the almighty.

The 16th century Durgiana Temple draws Hindu sages and scholars from all over the country as it is a well-known repository of Hindu scriptures. Dedicated to goddess Durga, the temple is modeled on the Golden Temple with its main shrine rising from the midst of a tank, its central dome covered with gold, and the rest of the structure clad in marble. Also known as the Lakshmi Narayan Temple, as a large section of it is dedicated to the Hindu deities Laxmi and Narayan, the intricate carvings of goddess Durga in her various incarnations, are particularly remarkable. The Durgiana temple was rebuilt in the 20th century, and its foundation stone was laid by the freedom fighter Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, who was also an educationist and founded the Benaras Hindu University. Durgiana Temple is open daily, from dawn until dusk, and admission is free. A good time to visit is just before sunset, when bright lights spectacularly illuminate the main temple and water tank.
