History

Havelock Island remained virtually unknown to the rest of the world for many centuries. ... The island which was once only inhabited by tribal natives, now has settlers from different parts of the Indian mainland. The government of India actively promotes eco-tourism on this island. Like the other islands in Andaman Archipelago, Havelock Island remained virtually unknown to the rest of the world for many centuries. During the early years of the British colonization of India, in the 18th century, a marine surveyor named John Ritchie was commissioned to travel the seas off the eastern coast of India and charter the routes to any islands he may find. This was the first expedition undertaken to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. In honor of John Ritchie, a group of islands to the eastern side of the main island of this archipelago was named Ritchie’s Archipelago. Havelock Island is the largest in this group of islands and is the most frequently visited island among the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The island which was once only inhabited by tribal natives now has settlers from different parts of the Indian mainland. The government of India actively promotes eco-tourism on this island. But for the most part, it remains unaffected by modern technology and offers a getaway to the middle of nowhere for globetrotters.

Best Time

The best time to visit Havelock Island is between the months of October and April. October to February is the winter season, and many honeymooners like to visit the island during this time. The temperature ranges between 15 ⁰C and 34 ⁰C during these months. March and April are part of the summer season in Havelock Island. It is a great time to enjoy various water sports like snorkeling, diving, etc. The temperature remains between 28 ⁰C and 30 ⁰C. The weather is quite pleasant during these months.

The climate of Andaman and Nicobar Islands is described as Tropical Climate. The Islands are situated in the Hot or Torrid Zone. Nearly 86 percent of the total area in these Islands is covered by forest. There are only two seasons viz. Rainy Season and Summer Season and virtually there is no Winter Season.Havelock Islands are visited by South - West and North - East monsoons during the period from May to December. Average annual rainfall in these Islands is 3000 mm. The period from January to April is Summer Season. The mean relative humidity is 79% The mean maximum temperature is 30.2 C and the mean minimum temperature is 23.8 C.

Many local buses run along the two main roads in Havelock Island. These roads connect the two most popular beaches on the island, Beach No. 1 and Beach No. 7. These buses also ply to Beach No. 5 where most of the accommodations are located.

A British colonial time in this area, in the name of General Mr. Henry Havelock, the current population of the island was mostly done by Bengali and Myanmar migrants. The visit to Havlok Island became the center of Andaman Tourism, attracting national and international hotel chains to open their resorts in Havelock.
