OVERVIEW

One of the most admired and impressive palaces in India, Jahangir Mahal in Orchha is the brainchild of Raja Bir Singh Deo-1. Built between the years 1605 and 1626, in honor of Mughal emperor Jahangir, the decorative palace today occupies a distinct position in the chapters of Orchha's history. This was the principal zenana and was used mainly by the Rajput wives of Akbar. It is one of the earliest surviving buildings of Akbar's reign. Jahangir in his memories has clearly mentioned that the buildings were erected by his father Akbar. Mughal Empress Nur Jahan used this as her residence. Shahjahani Mahal is situated in between the white marble Khas-Mahal and the red stone Jahangiri Mahal inside the Agra Fort. This Mahal is the earliest attempt of the Mughal ruler Shah Jahan to convert an existing red stone building in accordance with his taste and it is his earliest palace in Agra Fort. It has a large hall, side rooms and an octagonal tower on the river side.

Interesting facts about the Jahangiri Mahal

Emperor raised his Mansab to Twelve Thousand, in 1585, at the time of his betrothal to his cousin Rajkumari Man Bai, daughter of Bhagwant Das of Amer. The marriage with Man Bai took place on 13 February 1585. Jahangir named her Shah Begum and gave birth to Khusrau Mirza. In the year 1594, the Mughal Emperor Akbar dispatched Prince alongside Abul Hasan Asaf Khan to defeat the renegade Vir Singh Deo of Bundela and capture the city of Orchha.  The Emperor gave him the title of Nazir. Prince Salim forcefully succeeded to the throne on Thursday, 3 November 1605, eight days after his father’s death emerging victorious in the vicious struggle for succession between the five prominent and legitimate sons.  Jahangir defeated Khusrau Mirza in 1606 and confined in the fort of Agra. Jahangir partially blinded Khusrau Mirza as punishment for rebellion. Nur Jahan transferred his body to Lahore and buried him in Shahdara Bagh, a suburb of Lahore, Punjab. Prince Khurram succeeded him and took the title of Shah Jahan. Jahangir’s elegant mausoleum is located in the Shahdara locale of Lahore. Located at a distance of approximately 20 km from the city of Jhansi, Orccha is easily accessible by roadways and railways. The nearest airport is the Gwalior Airport, which is at a distance of 150 km from Orccha. You can take a cab or auto rickshaw to explore the attractions within the city. Nur Jahan transferred his body to Lahore and buried him in Shahdara Bagh, a suburb of Lahore, Punjab. Prince Khurram succeeded him and took the title of Shah Jahan.
