Shri Shantadurga Temple, Kavlem Goa (India)
he village Kavalem belonged to the Harijan community. The people from the village were kind enough to provide a Shantagurga Temple Kavlem Goa safe place for installation of the Devi. The idol of the Devi was installed in a small house in that village. After some time the house where the Devi was placed took the form of a small temple and regular prayers were held in the temple. The devotees of Shree Shantadurga did not forget the kindness shown by the Harijan community by providing a safe place for the Devi. All the people from the community were invited to the temple and were felicitated. This incident took place on Magha Shukla Shashthi day. Since then every year on the Magha Shukla Shashthi day the temple authorities invite the Harijans from the Kavalem and honor them by presenting them with Devi’s saree, blouse piece, coconut, etc. This custom is being observed for the last four centuries without fail. Shri Shantadurga Temple is a large temple located at the foothill of Kavlem village in Ponda Taluka. This temple is considered as one of the most important and the biggest temple in Goa. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Shantadurga the Goddess of Peace. The deity is also called 'Santeri' informally. According to the legend, a fierce battle was made between Shiva and Vishnu that Lord Brahma prayed to Parvati to intervene, which she did in the form of Shantadurga. Shantadurga placed Vishnu on her right hand and Shiva on her left hand and settled the fight. The deity of Shantadurga is shown as holding two serpents one in each hand representing Vishnu and Shiva. This avatar of Shree Jagdamba Devi which had come to make peace between Shree Vishnu and Shree Shiva came to be known as Shree Shantadurga Devi.

Shri Shantadurga is Temple (Mandir) a very popular pilgrimage place which is situated at Kavalem village, north Goa (Ponda taluka). This temple was started to build in 1730 and was completed in 1738. Devotees it renovated in 1966 when Goa free from Portuguese colony rule. This temple was dedicated to goddess Shantadurga. According to the local people legends when Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva fought against then Shantadurga (Goddess Parvati) play the role of the mediates and stopped fight. Goddess Shantadurga idols stand between Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. This original temple was located at Quelossim but destroyed by a Portuguese ruler in 1564. Devotees it moved to Kavalem village. The present temple was built in 1739. The temple of Shree Shantadurga devi was originally at Keloshi. In Keloshi Shree Shantadurga Devi was known as Santeri devi and was worshipped by that name. Shree Shantadurga's temple was built at Keloshi by an affluent merchant, Anu Shenai Mone.
