History

The Summer Hill is located at a distant suburb near Shimla, at an altitude of 2,123 meters above the main sea level. Situated on a mountain, the hill station is located about 5 km west of the Shimla Ridge. It is also a part of the popular seven-hill cluster. The relevance of the Summer Hill can be dated back in history, as Mahatma Gandhi used to stay at the Georgian royal mansion, whenever he visited Shimla. The summer hills are also widely known as the Potter’s Hill. Pine and deodar trees occupy the slopes of the hill. The beauty of this place has inspired many artists to live here, including Amrita Shergil, an eminent painter. Other than being a famous tourist destination, the summer hills also house the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, which was constructed in 1965. It also houses the Himachal Pradesh University that offers multiple post graduate programmes across different fields including Humanities, Languages, Science, Commerce, Management, and Law.

Summer season is a peak season in Shimla. This is because during the season, the weather remains pleasant and it the best time to enjoy adventure sports. The temperature ranges between 15°C (59° F) and 30°C (86° F) in summers.

Welcome to Summer Hill, a small and beautiful place located about 5 km from Shimla, which promises some solitary moments in the lap of nature. Part of the seven hill cluster, this place used to be the residence of Mahatma Gandhi during his short trips here. He stayed at the beautiful mansion of Rajkumari Amrit Kaur whenever he visited Shimla. Lined with beautiful deodar and pine trees, Summer Hill is commonly known as Potter's Hill and is also home to Himachal Pradesh University Campus. The streets are adorned with stunning residential buildings and some of these belong to the family of Amrita Shergil, the legendary painter.
