Tara Devi temple is located at Tarav Parvat on western side of Shimla. It is belief that Maa Tara Devi was brought by a person(King) from Bengal. He used to wear a locket in which idol of Maa Tara was located. He visited place around 100 years ago. He placed his locate at this place, and many generation of his dynasty passes here.A wooden idol was installed there first and later proper temple was build during 1825.Tara Devi Temple is located in Shimla at a distance of around 11 Km. Temple is dedicated to Maa Tara and is located on Kalka-Shimla Highway on Tara Devi hill top near Shogi, Shimla.

Best Time to Visit

Shimla in summers: From March till June. Summer season is a peak season in Shimla. This is because during the season, the weather remains pleasant and it the best time to enjoy adventure sports.

The origin of this temple is traced back to 250 years when the Goddess Tara was brought to Himachal Pradesh from West Bengal. One fine day, the Maharaja had a vision of Tara along with Hanuman and he donated a huge piece of his land to build the temple. The temple consisted of a wooden idol of the deity, but after some years, the temple was shifted to the top of the hill known as Tara Parvat. The magnificent idol is was made of 'Ashtadhatu', a rare combination of 8 elements.

Peace at religious places should always be maintained.Modest dressing is recommended.Photography without permission is not advisable.Try and catch the Wrestling Fair held in the month of September.Every time is best time to visit temples or spiritual places but temple is only opened between 7 am to 6:30 pm. Raja Balbir Sen of the Sen dynasty built this shrine in 1825, during the Vikrami era. There are many legends associated with the origins of the temple. According to one of those, Raja Balbir's ancestor, Raja Bhupender Sen, had envisioned Maa Tara - the deity of his dynasty, and built a shrine in eastern West Bengal. Later, when Raja Balbir Sen had a vision of the deity expressing her desire to be placed on Tara Parvat, he got an ashtadhatu idol made by a Gusanwu artist. An elephant named Shankar carried the idol from West Bengal to Himachal Pradesh.A backdrop framed by dense Pine forests and the distant snow-capped Himalayas complements the beauty of the shrine. On Shardiya Navratras' Ashtami (8th day of the Puja), an annual fair is organised in the temple complex, attracting hordes of devotees. The predecessors of Sen dynasty still come to Tara Devi during the fair to offer prayers to the deity.
