Interesting facts about Viceregal Lodge

Viceregal Lodge is spread across an area of 110 acres of land.Quite famous for boasting an amazing architecture, the building offers a panoramic view of the Shimla mountain ranges and is ideal for history lovers, experience seekers and connoisseurs. Here you can enjoy a short stroll around the garden area or visit the cafeteria to satisfy your appetite with light bites.

There is a museum located inside the institution that houses the photographs and the texts from the era of the British colonial rule. One of the famous alumni of this institute is Burmese Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi who stayed here as a research fellow for about two years from 1987-1989.


It is located on the Observatory hill, one of the seven hills of Shimla. The building was constructed as a resident place for Lord Dufferin, the then Viceroy of India (1884-1888).The Viceregal Lodge also known as Rashtrapati Niwas is one of the most architecturally impressive and historically significant buildings in the area. The Lodge was the residence of the Indian Viceroy during summers who governed the entire Indian subcontinent between 1888 and 1946. For visitors, the Viceregal Lodge is an extensive Mock-Tudor stately home which is surrounded by absolutely beautiful, and immaculately maintained gardens. Today, only a few of the rooms of the Lodge can be toured as the structure has been made a University complex. By visiting the Viceregal Lodge, you would be able to admire the architectural brilliance of the structure and get an insight as to how the Viceroy lived back in those times.
