There is no historical account of how the region got its name but it is believed that Yousmarg was called Roosmarg-the meadow of deer and with passage of time it became Yousmarg. The region till some decades ago had abundance of wild life and was famous for the large number of deer that inhabited the region.Located at an altitude of 8900 feet above sea level , Yusmarg is around 45 kilometers from Srinagar city, towards the south-western direction. The South Kashmir districts of Pulwama and Shopian are located towards eastern side of Yusmarg. While traveling to Yusmarg from Srinagar, on the way is located the shrine of revered saint Sheikh Noorudin Wali (RA) at Charari Sharief. Yusmarg is a lush green pasture surrounded by forest and snow clad mountains of Pir Panchaal range. The Doodh Ganga river (Nullah) flows in the western side of this meadow making this destination attractive for locals as well as international tourists.
May to September for Summers and November to February for winters are the best times to be in Yusmarg.

You can reach Yusmarg by public transport (albeit, with efforts) from Srinagar and Pahalgam. From Srinagar, the route is Srinagar–>Chanapora–>Chadora–>Charar-e-Sharif–>(less frequent) Yusmarg. From Pahalgam, the route is Pahalgam–>Anantnag–>Pulwama–>Pehripora–>Yusmarg.
If you hire a car, then Yusamrg to Srinagar is a drive of a couple of hours. Srinagar to Yusmarg and back to Srinagar is logistically possible in one day. But most of that day will be spent in the car and on a horseback in Yusmarg.
There are other longer treks as well, that can be done from Yusmarg. The trek to Sang-e-Safed is supposed to be through a beautiful virgin trail. Doodhpathri, another bowl-shaped valley of Kashmir is another long trek from Yusmarg. Both will take at least two days to return to Yusmarg, taking a guide is highly recommended. Tosa Maidan is another arduous trek which can now be done from Yusmarg, since the area was recently made accessible public.
